Greetings:
I hope that this June 2017 Newsletter finds you and your family in the joy and laughter of summer. The 2016-2017 school year has provided tremendous excitement, success, and opportunity for our educators, staff, and most important, our students.
I have been deeply humbled and honored to continue my life’s work and commitment to service to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and on the front lines of public education as your School Board Member. I am equally proud to share in the success of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and its unrelenting effort to close and eliminate the achievement gap and the persistent challenges in underperforming schools. As the School Board Member of District 1 which previously had the highest number of failing schools, I am pleased to announce that the “F” schools in District 1 no longer exist.
- Carol City Middle School improved from an F to a C.
- North Dade Middle School improved from an F to a C.
- Parkview Elementary School improved from an F to a C.
- Dr. Frederica S. Wilson/Skyway Elementary improved from an F to a B.
Congratulations to the principals, teachers, staff, and community stakeholders of each of these schools, as well as the Board and Superintendent and his staff for their leadership and dedication in the improvement of these and other fragile schools throughout the school district. We know, however, as there remains students sitting on the margins of learning and life-long success, there is yet more work to be done.
As you continue to enjoy the summer with family and friends, please do so with a love for life and pursuit of joy and happiness. We look forward to your return this Fall with a renewed sense of commitment, dedication, love, and hope for a better, brighter future for public education, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and more important, the children we are tremendously blessed and honored to reach, teach, and touch each day.
Again, thanks for your support and all that you do. May God bless and keep each of you and may the winds always be at your back.
Let’s go!
Educationally,
Steve Gallon III
